Morgan's Vale and Woodfalls
CE Primary School

Faith in learning, achievement for all

Who Are We?

Graham Nagel-Smith, Headteacher

Graham Nagel-Smith

I have been Headteacher at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Primary School since 2004 having previously taught in an Independent School for children aged 2-16 and a large comprehensive Secondary School. I completed my teaching qualification straight after my degree and my Headteacher’s qualification (NPQH) shortly before taking up the post at MVW and have been teaching since 1994.

My staff and I have worked hard to create a harmonious learning environment where everyone feels welcome and able to achieve their very best and the School’s Christian character is at the centre of this. I attend all the governors meetings and am a member of both of the governors sub-committees.

Out of school I am married with four boys (and a dog), I am actively involved in our local church and play hockey for a local team.

A retired teacher, I have taught children of Primary School age in both the state and independent sectors and, whilst my two children were young, set up and ran a successful village Nursery School for 3-5 year olds.

I have always enjoyed the challenge of Maths and have had the responsibility of teaching this across varying age groups, including preparation for SATs in Year 6. It has been interesting to see how methods have changed over the years.

As a pianist, music has played a big part in my life and, for a number of years, I thoroughly enjoyed being an official accompanist at a local dance school in Fordingbridge.

A member of St. Mary’s PCC, I am a Foundation Governor and serve on the Curriculum Committee. I am the link Governor for RE and Collective Worship and co-ordinate the Open the Book team.

I visit school on a regular basis. Whether listening to reading, running Church Festival related workshops or just making tea at Parents’ Evenings, there is always a warm welcome from both children and staff.

I was co-opted to join the Governing Body in September 2016 and serve on the Finance, Staff & Buildings Committee due to my background in the financial sector. My association with the school dates back to 1996 when my family moved to the village. My two sons and daughter all attended the school for various periods from 1996-2001. Subsequently between 2008 and 2014 I was the Clerk to the Governor’s at the School; I hope this has given me a good understanding of the school and the working of the Governing Body.

I graduated from the London School of Economics (Bsc. Economics) and subsequently completed professional qualifications in Insurance and Investment Analysis. I worked in Investment Management for 24 years for insurance companies, a pension fund and most recently for a Friendly Society in Bournemouth. I still take a very keen interest in financial markets which takes up much of my time these days as a private investor.

My hobbies include gardening, pub quizzes and dog walking.

I was appointed parent governor in June 2016 and I am a member of the Finance, Staffing and Buildings Committee.

I graduated from the University of Plymouth where I read English and from the University of Greenwich where I gained my PGCE in Applied ICT. I have taught for the last thirteen years in both London and more recently (2011) in Bournemouth where I am the head of Computer Science and strategic lead for IT across the school at Bournemouth School for Girls. In 2014 I gained the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership in school from the University of Winchester which I am hoping to convert in an MA in Education in due course. Prior to entering the teaching profession, I worked as a web developer for a design agency based in Soho and for Macmillan Publishers in Kings Cross.

My wife (Bex) and I have three children at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Primary School all of which are in Early Years or key stage 1 and these three are the reasons that I am no longer able to enjoy travelling and live music as much as I used to, although I wouldn’t swap them for the world.

I am particularly interested in harnessing the potential of our parents to help make the school the best it can be for our children and the local community.

I have a degree in Educational Psychology and a Masters in Health Psychology, although I worked for 16 years in Genetic research which I found fascinating. I have a grown up son and daughter and one gorgeous grandson.

I have been a Governor for 11 years and for all of my time as a Governor have been on the Finance, Staffing and Buildings (FSB) Committees. I believe that children with learning difficulties should be supported and that bright children should be stretched. I am interested in all areas of school life, but I suppose Pastoral Care is my particular interest.

I enjoy most sports, my hobbies are walking, tennis and occasional golf. I also volunteer one day a week for a local charity.
